Diabetes Care
Diabetes affects more than 25 million people in the United States, young and old. AllianceHealth Ponca City wants every person dealing with any type of this disease (type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes), to receive the information they need to best manage this issue and live a long, healthy life. Our diabetic education program is designed to help, offering personal, individualized information about living with and controlling diabetes, including dealing with medications, getting enough exercise, performing blood glucose testing, taking preventative measures and achieving lifelong nutrition.
Although the cause of diabetes is unknown, we do know that genetics and lifestyle can play a big part in managing this condition. That's why it's important to be tested if you have any of the following risk factors:
- A blood relative with diabetes
- A history of gestational diabetes, or have had a baby weighing more than nine pounds
- Are Native American, African American, Asian, Hispanic or Pacific Islander
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Obesity
While diabetes cannot be cured, it is treatable and can be controlled. With education and support, diabetic patients can lessen their risk for developing complications like kidney damage, blindness and limb amputation.
